New Enterprise Creation Programmes (NECPs) also popularly known as Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (EDP) are widely recognized as an effective tool to promote SMEs that lead to creation of income and wealth and developing economies on a new trajectory of economic development through promotion of well-groomed and competent entrepreneurs. It has also proved as very important instrument for generation of employment and self-employment. The strategy for promotion of SMEs through training and counselling interventions also helps poverty alleviation in a significant manner. The logic is simple. People are poor because they do not have enough sources of employment and thus income so that they are able to meet their basic needs. If employment is to be generated at a wider scale, it will require emergence and growth of a large number of enterprises that generate jobs. To promote and create new enterprises, countries will need a constant flow of entrepreneurs who exploit opportunities by setting up their own enterprises. This will lead to the creation of new jobs. Thus, as a viable strategy, every country needs to augment the supply of competent entrepreneurs.
